Caregiver Mental Health: Who’s Looking Out for You?

Caring for someone, whether it’s a job or for a family member, can be one of the most rewarding things you do. But it can also be one of the toughest. It’s long hours, emotional ups and downs, and the constant feeling that you’ve got to hold everything together.
Somewhere in the middle of that, your own needs can get lost. And when that happens, stress, burnout, and even health issues can creep in.
I. Burnout Doesn’t Just Happen Overnight
It usually sneaks up on you. Here’s what to keep an eye on:
- You’re tired all the time, even when you’ve slept.
- You find yourself getting irritable over small things.
- Sleep and appetite are all over the place.
- You feel disconnected from work or the person you’re caring for.
- Your body’s showing signs, headaches, stomach issues, tension.
If this sounds familiar, it’s your mind and body waving a big red flag.
II. Keeping Yourself in the Picture
Looking after yourself isn’t a luxury, it’s part of doing the job well. A few things that help:
- Take real breaks. Even ten minutes where you’re not “on” can make a difference.
- Ask for help before you hit the wall. Swap shifts, tap into respite care, or get family to pitch in.
- Keep something just for you. A hobby, a walk, a friend you call, anything that’s not about caregiving.
- Move a bit every day. It doesn’t have to be a workout, just get your body going.
- Talk to someone. Whether it’s a counsellor, a support group, or a friend who listens.
