Fulfilling a Dying Wish
In a remarkable display of teamwork, the Classic LifeCare team in Comox recently came together to fulfill a dying wish. This heartwarming story exemplifies the dedication and selflessness of our Classic LifeCare employees, who strive to provide comfort and support to those in need.
The Dying Wish of a Member of the Comox Community
Last week, the Comox Scheduling team received a call from a caregiver in distress. The caregiver was providing palliative care to a close family friend. Despite being offered a place in a local hospice, the client, a 100-year-old individual, expressed a heartfelt desire to spend their final moments at home, surrounded by familiarity and peace.
Laila, a Client Care Coordinator at Classic LifeCare Comox, answered the call and immediately took action to assist the caregiver and her client. Despite the challenge of scheduling 5-6 consecutive long shifts, Laila reached out to the healthcare workers in Comox, explaining the situation and the client’s wish.
The Power of Compassion
The response from the healthcare workers was overwhelming. The Comox team rallied together, demonstrating an inspiring level of compassion and determination. Some staff members were willing to commute long distances to help, while others without access to transit offered to cover shifts for their colleagues. This incredible display of teamwork showcased the unwavering commitment to fulfilling the client’s dying wish.
Grateful for the help offered by Classic LifeCare, the caregiver informed her client about the support they would receive the next day. The client passed away peacefully that same night. The caregiver expressed her heartfelt gratitude to the Comox team for their assistance and comfort during such a difficult time and on such short notice.
“I’m grateful that I got the opportunity to share a moment of humour amid so much stress and worry. Laila informed me that it was ok to feel all the feelings including joy when it occurs. Classic LifeCare quickly scheduled the care which I really appreciated. I believe that it was my relief that made him feel like it was ok to leave that night. It takes a special kind of person to do what Client Care Coordinators and Healthcare Workers do and I am very thankful to everyone involved. “
Classic LifeCare Strives to Help Fulfill Everyone’s Dying Wish
Reflecting on this moving interaction, Laila says:
“I am immensely grateful for the extraordinary team of healthcare workers we have here in Comox. Their empathy and compassion never cease to amaze me. These interactions serve as a poignant reminder of the importance of the Client Care Coordinator role. We schedule multiple shifts per day, and sometimes forget how impactful this work is for others in need.”
At Classic LifeCare, we believe everyone deserves to make choices around their final hours whenever possible. We are committed to honoring each of our client’s wishes to stay at home. This heartwarming story serves as a reminder of the profound impact that small acts of kindness can have during challenging times.
