Dementia Friends and Classic LifeCare
Home care provider Classic LifeCare is praising Dementia Friends Canada in its campaign to help educate the public about the disease.
Dementia Friends Campaign
Susan Fulton, Clinical Leader for Classic LifeCare, says she loves the Dementia Friends video and campaign. It encourages the empathy and humanity required when interacting with people with dementia.
“I think this video campaign is wonderful,” says Fulton. “It’s exactly in line with the education we give to our Health Care Workers and nurses. Dementia can affect anyone, not just the elderly, and when you know the signs and symptoms to watch for and how to react to them, that can go a long way in helping those suffering from the disease.”
Launched on June 5, Dementia Friends Canada encourages Canadians to view a video online and sign up to become a “Dementia Friend.”
The video explains how to spot warning signs of the condition, such as loss of memory, disorientation, changes in mood and behaviour, and difficulty speaking.
It then explains the best ways to respond to somebody with dementia, such as speaking slowly and maintaining eye contact.
The campaign encourages viewers to spread the message to their social circles and work places.
“Put yourself in the shoes of the person with dementia,” says Fulton. “How would you want to be treated? How would you want your parents treated if they had dementia? Dementia Friends is educating people about empathy.”
