Navigating the Alberta Healthcare System
The Alberta Healthcare System is funded through taxes and provides coverage for essential medical services. The Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan (AHCIP) offers coverage for eligible residents, including visits to doctors, specialists, and hospital care.
Accessing the Alberta Healthcare System
Family doctors are beneficial for primary care needs. To find a family doctor in Alberta, you can use the Alberta “Find a Doctor” tool provided by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta.
Alberta Health Services offers various online resources to enhance healthcare access and convenience. These include online appointment booking, virtual care options, health advice lines, and access to personal health records through My Records.
Home Healthcare Services
Home care services can be provided through the Alberta Health Services (AHS) Home Care program, it offers a range of health and support services to individuals in their own homes. It is built to help people of all ages who have health needs that can be managed outside of a hospital or care facility.
Home care services in Alberta can include assistance with activities of daily living (such as bathing, dressing, and meal preparation), medication management, nursing care and therapy services (physiotherapy or occupational therapy), palliative care, and respite services for caregivers.
Classic LifeCare is a vendor for the Alberta Health Services Home Care Pediatric team. We provide care for children under 18 years of age in a home care and school capacity to ensure they can live their lives to the fullest. We may also provide companionship for children while in Alberta Children’s Hospital.
Eligibility for home care services is based on an assessment of the individual’s needs. A healthcare professional from AHS, such as a case manager or nurse, will conduct an assessment to determine the level of care required and the appropriate services.
What happens if your loved one does not meet the requirements of the Alberta Healthcare System or needs more support?
That is when Classic LifeCare can help. Classic LifeCare supports families who may need more support than AHS can offer. We work closely alongside Blue Cross, Worker’s Compensation Board of Alberta (WCB), Family Support for Children with Disabilities (FSCD), and Children’s Family Services. We provide home care for all generations.
Private home care allows flexibility in the care that can be provided. Tailored care plans that fit your loved one’s needs as well as consistency and continuity with the staff providing the care.
The Alberta healthcare system can change rapidly. Therefore, it’s good to refer to the official websites of Alberta Health Services or consult with healthcare professionals for the most up-to-date and accurate information.
