Pediatric Care Resources

Guidance, tools, and support for families navigating home care for children with complex health needs — because every child deserves to thrive at home.

Understanding Pediatric Care

What it is, who it’s for, and how it works

Pediatric home and school care is specialized support for children with complex medical needs, developmental conditions or recovery requirements — delivered in the comfort of your own home and coordinated with your child’s existing medical team.

An overview of what’s involved: the types of conditions supported, how care differs from adult home care, what a typical visit looks like, and how Classic’s pediatric team works alongside families and medical professionals.

Common situations that lead families to pediatric care in home or schools: chronic illness management, post-surgical recovery, developmental support, respite for parents, and transitioning home from hospital.

What to Expect with Classic LifeCare

Understanding the care process and your role in it

Pediatric care plans are developed in close collaboration with parents, guardians, and the child’s medical team. We start with a thorough assessment of your child’s health needs, daily routines, likes and dislikes, and family goals. The plan is a living document — reviewed regularly, adjusted as your child grows, and always shaped by your input.

When appropriate, Classic LifeCare can coordinate with schools and community programs to ensure your child’s care is consistent across environments. This may include communicating with school support staff, sharing relevant health information (with your consent), and ensuring transitions between home and school are smooth and safe.

We actively encourage feedback—it’s how we continue to improve. You can speak directly with your care coordinator anytime, as we’re available 24/7, 365 days a year. You can also contact your local branch, call our after-hours number provided in your welcome package.

All concerns are taken seriously and followed up on promptly.

The Family Portal gives you visibility into your loved one’s care schedule, visit details, and care team. You can access it anytime through our website or the app. It’s designed to give family members peace of mind, especially when you can’t be there in person.

A Classic LifeCare Case:
Supporting a Cross-Country Medical Journey

Classic LifeCare recently supported a cross-country
medical journey for a 9-month-old with complex needs, his
toddler sister, and their grandmother. With care and
compassion, our Clinical Nursing Supervisor, Nikki Walsh,
accompanied the family from Calgary to New Brunswick,
helping manage NG tube feeds and offering steady support
during unexpected delays and challenges. Rather than
taking over, Nikki empowered the grandmother, offering
reassurance and guidance throughout the trip. It was a
powerful reminder that great care isn’t just clinical—it’s
personal, human, and built on trust.

A Classic LifeCare Case:
Client-Centered Care for Carter

Carter attended a farm school in rural Alberta outside of Calgary. Although not
a typical arrangement, Classic LifeCare said “Yes” to supporting Carter at
home and during his involvement at farm school.

supported Carter amidst farm animals, an outhouse and mud up to her knees
some days.

As Carter’s health declined and became palliative, Classic was able to connect
with the greater care team and physician involved. Everyone adjusted as
Carter’s health required, while care shifted to less school and more home.
Carter passed away at home with his parents present, as well as the Classic
LifeCare Care Workers, who had cared for him throughout his health journey.
