On Sunday, September 17, Classic LifeCare took part in the annual Terry Fox run in Calgary. Britney, our Business Growth Leader, and her son River ran to support cancer research. People of all ages came together to join Terry’s mission of raising awareness and important funds for cancer research. The emotions were evident in the large crowd as they ran or walked in honor of loved ones affected by this disease.

Terry Fox’s Legacy

Terry Fox was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, a rare bone disease, at 18 years of age. This led to his leg being amputated above his right knee. Despite these challenges, Terry had a dream to run across Canada, from Newfoundland to British Columbia. This journey became known as the Marathon of Hope and ignited inspiration all across Canada. In 1980, he set out on this incredible journey, running an average of 42km (26 miles) each day. Terry covered 5,000km (3,100 miles) before his cancer forced him to stop. It had spread to his lungs and it was no longer safe to continue.

Terry passed away in 1981 at the age of 22. His dream of raising money for cancer research lives on through the Terry Fox Foundation. Every September, thousands of Canadians participate in local Terry Fox runs to carry forward his mission. This year’s Terry Fox run in Calgary raised an impressive $261K for cancer research.

The Van of Hope Exhibit is currently stationed at Heritage Park for 143 days, symbolizing the length of Terry’s run. We are eager to visit the van and contribute to continuing Terry’s extraordinary legacy. This activity was part of our Classic Cares initiative where we support our local communities to thrive.
